Bead of Truth Artist Statement: Zoé Thouin-Rochester
My interest in beads, Trade Beads, specifically started in childhood where I was captivated by photographs of jewelry worn by Native people, often featured in the National Geographic magazine. What’s not to love...bold color, natural objects of bone and bird, and assemblages that stretch the limits of the imagination. As an adult, I learned that beads are the oldest artform known to man, both as objects of adornment, and as legal tender. Obtaining Trade Beads of my own and fascinated by the obvious question of who and how many loved these beads before me, I couldn’t help but take up the art of jewelry making. My pieces are the result of my childhood interest and my own artistic eye. Each piece is unique.
Artforms that occupied my time prior to jewelry making were photography and pastel painting. A recent Middle School Science Teacher retiree, I also enjoy knitting and sourdough bread baking.
