Public Functionary presents Dhaanto by Yasmin Yassin, an exhibition that pays homage to a local Twin Cities-based dance troupe running out of The Somali Museum of Minnesota.
About the Exhibit:
Dhaanto (Big Leap) celebrates a hidden group of culture bearers within the Somali community -- a dance troupe and their coach who hold the knowledge of traditional dances and are passing it along to waves of young first-generation Somali Americans. Through photos, text, and the debut screening of new short film, Dhaanto explores themes of cultural transference, and its value within diaspora communities.
Additional Events:
Thursday, September 14, 6pm-9pm - Dhaanto Opening Reception. Event includes a screening of short film, Dhaanto.
Friday, September 29: Public Functionary will host a joint artist/curator conversation with Za’Nia Coleman and Yasmin Yassin as part of Twin Cities Art Week programming. (7:00pm)
About the Artist:
Yasmin Yassin’s work focuses on celebrating & highlighting community-based stories and subcultures. Her goal is to tell stories as authentically as possible to their essence, with integrity towards those that invite her into their lives — in the tradition of her East African oral-storytelling heritage. Yasmin is part of Diversify Photo’s ‘Up Next’ list of photographers to watch, and was featured by Focus Camera as one of ten photographers to follow in 2022. Her first solo show, ‘Should Be Good Times’ exhibited at Augsburg Galleries as part of her 2022 Soomaal House of Art Fellowship, and was selected as a featured story by PHMuseum. Yasmin is a member of Black Women Photographers’ Collective and Authority Collective.
