A selection of Devra Freelander's sculptures, collaborative projects, and a performative work filmed in the Arctic
far away, deep inside brings together a selection of Devra Freelander's sculptures, collaborative projects, and a performative video work filmed in the Arctic from which the exhibition takes its title. Resin sculptures of all sizes are shown from Fluorescent Fragments (2018), a series of pieces salvaged from the artist's first major public artwork, Fluorescent Sunrise (2017) at Socrates Sculpture Park (Queens, NY). Using a circular saw to slice this sunrise from the earth, Freelander's crystalline remnants pulse with the burning pinks, yellows and oranges of dawn's transitory light.
The artist's performative video piece, far away, deep inside (2018) probes the issue of climate change from Freelander’s unique ecofeminist lens, examining "how we physically and digitally interact with climatologically endangered landscapes… Using my computer mouse and actual body to mimic anthropogenic processes like glacial melt, I use my body as a conduit for environmental catharsis, personally and intimately enacting the processes caused by our invisible but omnipresent societal carbon footprint.”
