Witches; the myth, the lore, the seduction, and the threat have existed since the medieval ages. As a collective of fiber artists, we would be remiss without noticing how feminist art forms–such as fiber–get looped in with witches. From a spindle being cursed in fairy tales to the Fates snipping the allotment of each human’s destiny; the connection between textile materials and magic is ever-present. There is also the overarching social commentary and history of wrongful deaths connected to accusations of practicing black magic. Apothecary, voodoo practices, brujería, and the healing arts branded as spiteful witchcraft, and, of course, the malice associated with an individual scorned. In pop culture–from film to plays with witch hunts as political allegory to celebrities brazenly declaring that they are going to curse someone via social media in a skin-eating ritual. Witchcraft still remains apocryphal and overall shrouded in mystery. Must be the season of the witch.
