The focus of my work in recent years has been human neurocomplexity as seen through the lens of a late diagnosed, cis-gender female on the autism spectrum. My new body of work explores the phenomenon of masking in autistic women. Utilizing discarded clothing, my artistic process begins by deconstructing these discarded garments. I then use a fabric collage technique to reassemble the clothing components into large geometric flat forms. The forms are intuitively stitched together resulting in a 3-dimensional soft sculpture or “mask.” Texture,
movement and depth are achieved through repetitive stitching and manipulation of the structure.

I am a visual artist and art educator. I am passionate about the healing power of creativity and am a teaching artist working with people at mental health crisis centers. My work in this show combines two of my favorite visual mediums - figurative painting and collage. Through my work helping people tap into their creativity, and my passion for the arts as a tool to heal, I created these pieces to communicate a variety of relatable emotions. Each piece begins with an emotion, worked out figuratively, and then hand painted newsprint collage brings to light what is not usually visually seen. www.betseyhodson.com
