Douglas Flanders & Associates Presents Dieterich Spahn: Lone Ranger and the State Fair Reject Show.
Douglas Flanders & Associates is proud to announce the debut solo exhibition of paintings by renowned artist Dieterich Spahn. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in Spahn's illustrious career, offering art enthusiasts a unique opportunity to experience his work in an additional medium.
Dieterich Spahn (German, b. 1938, Cologne, Germany — d. November 2, 2021, Minneapolis, MN) was a celebrated artist with an extensive body of work that spans over five decades. Best known for his breathtaking stained glass creations, Spahn has completed over 200 stained glass commissions worldwide. His work adorns numerous churches, synagogues, cathedrals, hospitals, universities, libraries, public spaces and private residences, captivating audiences with its vivid color, intricate design and spiritual depth; including major projects for institutions such as St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN, and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, where his stained glass windows have become iconic. Spahn's work is connected directly to contemporary German stained glass artists, mentors and contemporaries, many who have created work in the mediums of both glass and painting. Spahn continued to explore new media and techniques with his painting.
Dieterich Spahn’s imagery is drawn from a variety of sources, however always intrigued by form and color. His later work was inspired by images of antique toys, particularly from popular western films. He had said, I like to transform the toys into large-scale images, and introduce a different coloration to create a new identity, without losing the original charm. Composition of form and color, lines, and patterns on a textured surface integrate into a cohesive part of my abstract works.
Now, for the first time, DF&A will showcase Dieterich Spahn in a solo exhibition dedicated exclusively to his paintings. This body of work reveals the same mastery of light, color, and composition that has defined his stained glass work, but with a fresh and expressive approach to the canvas. Each painting offers a glimpse into Spahn’s creative evolution, reflecting his deep connection to both the natural world and the transcendent.
In addition to this exhibition, the gallery will be opening our walls to anyone who was rejected from the Minnesota State Fair Juried Art Show. All work will be for sale and 100% goes to the artist(s). Drop off your pieces either Saturday, August 17 or Tuesday, August 20.
