Migration & Memories

Migration & Memories

SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2024 is pleased to present 'Migration & Memories,' a group exhibition of over 60 visual artists sharing their personal migration stories and cultural memories.

The exhibition 'Migration & Memories' acknowledges and honors that everyone came from somewhere.  The artworks in the show portray the place and culture the artists and their people are from; capture their unique migration stories; commemorate their cultural heritage; and speak to the resilience and adjustments in the new homeland.  They interpret the notion of migration in many different ways – encompassing but not limited to the voluntary movement or forced displacement of individuals or populations across states, countries, continents, or oceans, for all sorts of reasons, be they political, economic, war related, climate driven, professional, or personal.  They embrace and celebrate the diversity of all the cultures and backgrounds of the various communities who come together every day to live, work, shop and play on the Eastside of St. Paul, and the greater Twin Cities area.

The exhibition comes in two formats:

  • 'Invited Gallery Exhibition:'  a traditional, gallery-style exhibition, held indoors at ArT @ 967 Payne, that brings together the voices of a select group of invited, established artists, many of them of significant renown.
  • 'Street Gallery Exhibition:' a street-side display of artworks in the storefront windows and indoor spaces of about 20-25 local businesses, creating a walkable "Street Gallery" experience spanning about five city blocks.  Artworks in this exhibit are selected from a public, juried Call for Art that was open to all artists, emerging or experienced.

About Solidarity Street Gallery:

SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY, in its fifth year in 2024, is a one-of-a-kind fine-art exhibition and cultural celebration on the East Side of St. Paul.  It invites visual artists to bring their work to one of the most diverse neighborhoods of St. Paul - and engage local residents and visitors from the Greater Twin Cities Area in cultural exchanges and conversations on topics important to the community.

For three days, on October 4 + 5 + 6, the historical Payne Avenue business district will be filled with inspiring art as it turns into a lively street fair and vibrant community gathering.  Live music and poetry readings at select exhibit locations will complement the visual art displays.  Local businesses and restaurants, many BIPOC owned, will play a central role in the celebration as they will feature fine art exhibits in their storefronts, and set up tables on their sidewalks to offer event specials.

Solidarity Street Gallery 2024 is produced in collaboration with ArT @ 967 Payne and the East Side Arts Council (which serves as the fiscal sponsor).  Major funding is provided through a grant from the East Side Funders Group.

The dates of SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2024 coincide with those of the Fall 2024 Saint Paul Art Crawl.
