The Century College Art Department presents, WAIT ROOM by Christopher Selleck.
The exhibition and all related events are free and open to the public. For WAIT ROOM the Century College main gallery will be transformed into an immersive weight room, where dumbbells, gym equipment, and athletic apparel become symbolic of the physical and mental preparation essential for training. At the heart of the space, a dedicated performance area will invite bodybuilders to lift and flex, though its use remains unpredictable—empty at times, heightening anticipation as visitors await the arrival of unannounced lifters to activate it.
The installation will pay homage to Eugen Sandow’s early 20th-century "Cabinet of Wonders," where he captivated audiences with displays of strength, while also offering a subversive nod to the metaphorical MAN BOX—a rigid construct of masculinity. Surrounding the space, large-scale studio portraits of lifters, meticulously created over several years, bring depth to the exhibit. These photographs transcend traditional physique photography, functioning as intimate portraits. The subjects’ softened expressions and direct gazes invite contemplation, fostering a deeper connection with the viewer. Classical influences—echoing Old Master paintings—emerge in the lighting, postures, and minimalist set design, forming a striking counterpoint to Selleck’s contemporary exploration of masculinity and the male body. The Century College Art Gallery is on the West Campus inside the Theater/Fine Arts Entrance
